Jim Chai Kee

Jim Chai Kee Noodles (270 West Beaver Creek Road, Richmond Hill, Ontario)
905-881-8778

A former favourite of mine, the prices here were incredibly. They're still low, but the prices have gone up with time. We used to call this place the $2 noodle place since that was how much a plain bowl of noodles in soup cost at the time. This was a much appreciated value when we were students with limited income.

In addition to being cheap, the wontons used to be handmade and huge. The service was also super fast, which was good for short lunch periods. The only problem we had with this restaurant at the time was that it didn't open on Wednesdays.

Wonton noodles.

The service is still pretty speedy. You can be in and out within fifteen minutes if you eat fast enough. Perhaps part of that is due to the fact that tea is self-serve (towards the back of the joint). I feel as though the wontons aren't as big, and they taste like they've got more starchy filler in them now. They tasted a bit doughy, and less shrimp-filled. I think they also took away the piece of vegetable that used to be hidden at the bottom.

Would I go back? Hmmm... yeah, but not as often as I used to. Some things just aren't the same as they used to be.

Total damage: Something cheap. Less than $10, and probably less than $7.
